The annual bird census began today across Odisha, with the Rourkela Forest Division conducting the exercise at 17 identified water bodies.

Forest officials and staff actively participated in the large-scale operation, which started at 6:30 am.

A total of 17 teams carried out the bird counting exercise, while 285 field staff ensured smooth and accurate documentation. Two Assistant Forest Officers, Shri Surajit Kumar Sahu and Shri Gajendra Pal Singh Mathur, closely monitored the process. Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Yashwant Sethi supervised the overall census in Rourkela.

Key locations included Mandira Dam, Pitamahal Dam, Brahmani River, Kaleiposh Reservoir, Balughat Tarkera Reservoir, Kucheita Pond, Dhamandhar Dam, Kansbahal Dam, Bishipur Pond, and several other water bodies. Together, these sites formed the 17 census points across the division.

Moreover, the census plays a vital role in assessing avian diversity, tracking migratory bird populations, and shaping conservation strategies. Officials emphasised that the data collected will strengthen efforts to protect habitats and maintain ecological balance.

Local communities also welcomed the initiative, noting that the census highlights Odisha’s rich biodiversity and reinforces the importance of preserving natural resources.
