An old roof collapsed during demolition work at a construction site in Bhubaneswar, trapping three labourers under debris on Tuesday late evening.
The tragedy, which occurred at Pokhariput Lingaraj Vihar, resulted in the death of one worker and left two others in critical condition.
The accident happened as workers were engaged in the demolition of an existing structure. Eyewitnesses reported that the roof suddenly gave way, burying the labourers beneath it. Immediate rescue operations were launched, but despite efforts, one worker succumbed to his injuries, while the other two were rushed to a nearby hospital with severe injuries.
Local authorities and emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, but the incident has raised serious questions about construction safety standards in the region.
The collapse has reignited concerns over the adequacy of safety protocols at construction sites across India, particularly in rapidly expanding urban centers like Bhubaneswar.
In response to the tragedy, labour unions and community leaders are demanding immediate action to prevent future occurrences.
