Real Madrid defeated Deportivo Alaves 2-1 in La Liga on Sunday, keeping its title chase alive and easing pressure on manager Xabi Alonso.
Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring in the 24th minute with a trademark strike after Jude Bellingham’s precise long pass. Alaves responded strongly, pushing Madrid’s makeshift defence and eventually equalising in the 68th minute through Carlos Vicente. His goal, initially flagged offside, stood after VAR confirmed the timing of his run.
Madrid regained control just eight minutes later. Vinicius Jr. powered down the left flank, beat his marker, and delivered a low cross that Rodrygo converted from close range. The decisive strike secured three points and ended Madrid’s poor run of form.
The victory lifted Real Madrid to second place in La Liga with 39 points, four behind leaders Barcelona. Alaves remained 12th with 18 points. For Alonso, the result provided breathing space after only two wins in the previous eight matches across all competitions.
Despite the win, Madrid showed vulnerabilities. Alaves dominated stretches of the game, backed by a sold-out Mendizorrotza stadium. Young academy graduate Victor Valdepenas made his senior debut at left back, highlighting Madrid’s defensive challenges.
The match underlined Madrid’s resilience but also exposed areas needing improvement. With Barcelona maintaining momentum, every point matters as the season heads into a decisive phase.
