A formal inquiry into the June 29 stampede near Gundicha Temple that claimed three lives during the Rath Yatra celebrations in Puri is gaining momentum.

On Tuesday, Development Commissioner-cum-Additional Chief Secretary Anu Garg conducted a pivotal hearing at the Special Circuit House in Puri, recording statements from 40 officials who were on duty during the tragic incident.

The proceedings were part of a broader investigation aimed at uncovering lapses and improving crowd management during large-scale religious festivities. Prior to the hearing, Garg, along with the District Collector, Superintendent of Police, and Chief Administrator of the Shree Jagannath Temple, visited the incident site to assess the scene and consult with servitors, media personnel, and police officials.

In a public outreach effort, the committee urged eyewitnesses and attendees to submit video footage or relevant information to puritragedy.enquiry@odisha.gov.in by July 20, which will aid in constructing a comprehensive timeline and understanding of the event.

The Rath Yatra, one of the grandest religious festivals in Odisha, draws massive crowds annually. This year’s event was marred by the tragic stampede, raising urgent questions about event preparedness, policing efficiency, and safety measures.
