Superstar Rajinikanth’s latest film Coolie has stormed the global box office, emerging as the No.1 film in the world in its opening weekend.
Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, the action-thriller collected an impressive Rs 194.25 crore net (Rs 233 crore gross) in India during its extended four-day opening weekend. Overseas, it earned over $18 million (Rs 160 crore), taking its worldwide tally to Rs 393 crore ($45 million) in just four days.
This makes Coolie the fastest Tamil film to cross Rs 100 crore, with trade analysts predicting it will breach the Rs 200 crore mark in India within days.
Globally, the film outperformed Hollywood’s horror release Weapons ($44 million) and Nobody 2 ($14 million), as well as Bollywood’s big-ticket release War 2 starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR ($30 million).
Industry trackers say the film’s success comes at a perfect time, with Hollywood’s summer season ending and no major US tentpole release dominating screens.
