Ravenshaw University, one of Odisha’s most prestigious institutions, is facing backlash following serious ragging allegations at its East Hostel.
Ten senior students have been ordered to vacate the hostel after being accused of verbally abusing and harassing first-year students late Saturday night.
According to university sources, the accused third-year undergraduates allegedly used offensive language and engaged in acts of intimidation within the hostel premises. The matter came to light after junior students lodged formal complaints.
Reacting swiftly, university authorities—including the Chief Warden and senior administrative staff—visited the hostel to address the situation. Initial resistance from the accused students was overcome after prolonged persuasion.
Following an internal inquiry, disciplinary action was taken: the ten students were directed to leave the hostel by Sunday evening and were given temporary accommodation at the university guest house. Their parents have also been notified.
In an official statement, the university reiterated its zero-tolerance policy on ragging and indiscipline, stressing that such behavior undermines the academic environment and will be dealt with firmly.
To prevent similar incidents, Ravenshaw University plans to intensify hostel inspections, launch awareness campaigns, and strengthen monitoring mechanisms across departments and hostels.
This incident comes close on the heels of a recent controversy where the university faced criticism for an order barring the presence of women on campus after 5:30 PM—a decision it later revoked.
