PV Sindhu penned a heartfelt note for Carolina Marin after the Spanish star announced her retirement from badminton.
Sindhu Reflects on Rivalry
Two-time Olympic medallist Sindhu described Marin as “a complete pain on court” while acknowledging the respect they shared off it. She recalled their first meeting as teenagers in the Maldives and highlighted their fierce battles, including heated moments during matches. Sindhu admitted frustration during one particular spat but said a later coffee meeting in Madrid showed the mutual respect that defined their rivalry.
Sindhu wrote on Instagram, “Some rivals become part of your journey forever. Carolina was one of them. To be honest, you were also a complete pain on court. The constant shouting, the intensity, the little tricks, they would get to anyone. But your skill, speed and fighting spirit were second to none.”
Marin’s Career Achievements
Marin retired due to a persistent knee injury, saying she wanted to prioritise her long-term health. She had hoped to bid farewell at the European Championships in Huelva but admitted disappointment at not ending her career as planned.
Marin leaves the sport as one of the greatest women’s singles players, with three world titles, seven European crowns, and Olympic gold at Rio 2016. Her last competitive appearance came at the Paris 2024 Olympics, capping a remarkable comeback after two ACL injuries.
Tributes poured in from across the badminton world, with Viktor Axelsen, Chirag Shetty, and others praising her legacy.
