Amid the spiritually vibrant atmosphere of Rath Yatra 2025, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced the transformative elevation of Puri Municipality into a full-fledged Municipal Corporation.
This long-anticipated civic upgrade is set to bring a wave of infrastructural reform and spiritual rejuvenation to the sacred coastal city.
The Chief Minister emphasised that the decision stems from the growing need to serve millions of devotees and local residents with quality civic services. “The current municipal framework can no longer accommodate the aspirations of Puri’s citizens or the devotees visiting year-round,” he stated.
Alongside the civic restructuring, CM Majhi unveiled plans to establish an international-standard Sri Jagannath Museum, Library, and Research Centre in Puri. The heritage complex will showcase Jagannath culture and temple history through paintings, miniature sculptures, Pattachitra, and interactive exhibits. An e-library and archival centre will further preserve and promote Odia culture, with resources accessible in multiple languages.
The museum complex will also feature a 300-seat auditorium for multilingual sound and light shows depicting episodes from Jagannath’s rich legacy. An open-air stage will allow cultural performances, promoting local artists and traditions.
Additionally, the government announced the rollout of a Digital Hundi system, allowing devotees worldwide to offer donations seamlessly via QR codes and online platforms. This initiative aligns with India’s broader “Digital Bharat” vision and enhances spiritual connectivity for remote devotees.
Incorporating areas from Puri Sadar and Brahmagiri blocks, the new Municipal Corporation will encompass several village panchayats, enabling uniform access to urban amenities.
The state government has set its sights on transforming Puri into a top-tier spiritual and tourism destination by 2036, aligning with Odisha’s broader development narrative. “A prosperous Odisha needs a sustainable, green, and inclusive Puri,” said CM Majhi, reaffirming the vision of a culturally enriched yet modern civic future.
