Puri Gajapati Maharaja Shri Dibyasingha Deb, a significant custodian of Jagannath culture, has strongly opposed the renaming of Digha Jagannath Temple as Jagannath Dham.
Following a review meeting of the temple management committee, he made it clear that in no circumstances should the temple be given this designation.
The Maharaja pointed out that several Jagannath temples exist across different locations, yet none have been named Jagannath Dham. Raising his concerns, he emphasised that the Odisha government has already communicated the issue to West Bengal’s Chief Minister, urging that the name Jagannath Dham be withdrawn officially.
Furthermore, he highlighted that the temple was constructed by the West Bengal government, which itself formed a trust to manage its operations. No private organisation has been responsible for its administration, strengthening its claim that the name change should be revoked by state authorities.
To preserve the sanctity and heritage of Shri Jagannath Temple, the Srimandir Management Committee has decided to regulate the height of buildings constructed outside the temple premises. The decision was announced by the Chief Administrator, Arabinda Padhee, following a committee meeting.
Concerns have been raised over the increasing number of tall buildings being constructed outside the Parikrama Project area, including around Sri Gundicha Temple. Many of these structures are being built without standardised regulations, prompting the administration to take action.
The Urban Development Department will be informed about the issue, and a formal request will be made to the government to establish height restrictions for these buildings. Officials believe this step will help maintain the temple’s traditional skyline and prevent any disruptions to its spiritual ambience.
Additionally, the committee has decided to legally patent all terminology related to Srimandir. This move aims to protect the temple’s cultural and historical significance, ensuring that its associated terms are used appropriately and respectfully.
The Chief Administrator emphasised that patenting temple-related terminology is a legal provision designed to safeguard the temple’s identity. This decision is expected to reinforce the temple’s heritage while preventing unauthorised usage of its sacred terms.
The Srimandir Management Committee continues to take proactive steps to preserve the temple’s legacy, ensuring that its surroundings remain in harmony with its historical and spiritual essence.
