Prashant Tamang, the celebrated winner of Indian Idol Season 3, passed away at the age of 43 in Delhi following a suspected cardiac arrest.

The Delhi Police confirmed his death, stating that his family has raised no suspicion of foul play. He was declared dead at Mata Chanan Devi Hospital, and a post-mortem is being conducted at DDU Hospital.

Born in Darjeeling, Tamang rose to national fame in 2007 while serving as a constable with Kolkata Police. His victory on Indian Idol was a moment of pride for the Gorkha community, and his music continued to resonate deeply with fans across India and Nepal. Known for songs such as Bir Gorkhali and Asare Mahinama, Tamang carved a niche by blending soulful melodies with cultural identity.

Beyond music, Tamang explored acting, appearing in Paatal Lok 2 and recently completing filming for Battle of Galwan, scheduled for release in April 2026. His versatility as an artist reflected his commitment to storytelling across media.

Tributes have poured in from colleagues and fans alike. Fellow contestants Bhaven Dhanak and Amit Paul expressed shock and grief, recalling Tamang’s humility and passion for music. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also extended condolences, highlighting his roots in Darjeeling and his service with Kolkata Police.

Tamang is survived by his wife, Geeta Thapa, whom he married in 2011, and their daughter, Ariah. His sudden passing has left a void in the music and entertainment industry, but his legacy as a voice of cultural pride and artistic integrity endures.

Prashant Tamang’s journey from a police constable to a national icon remains an inspiring story of talent, perseverance, and authenticity.
