Former India cricketers Pragyan Ojha and Rudra Pratap Singh are reportedly set to join the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) senior men’s selection committee.
Their appointments are expected to replace outgoing selectors Subroto Banerjee (Central Zone) and S Sharath (South Zone).
Limited Response to BCCI’s Call for Applications
The BCCI had invited applications for two vacancies in the senior selection panel last month. However, sources cited by The Indian Express revealed that the response from former top-level players was underwhelming. Despite the open call, very few high-profile names applied, leaving the board with a smaller pool of candidates to consider.
Among those who did apply were former India pacer Praveen Kumar, ex-Uttar Pradesh bowler Ashish Winston Zaidi, and Himachal Pradesh’s Shakti Singh from the Central Zone. Nevertheless, Ojha and RP Singh are now seen as the front-runners for the two key roles.
Experience and Credentials of the Duo
RP Singh, a left-arm pacer known for his ability to swing the ball, has represented India in 14 Tests, 58 ODIs, and 10 T20Is between 2005 and 2011. He was an integral part of India’s 2007 T20 World Cup-winning squad under MS Dhoni’s captaincy.
Ojha, meanwhile, was one of India’s most consistent left-arm spinners during his playing career. He featured in 24 Tests, 18 ODIs, and 6 T20Is from 2008 to 2013, earning a reputation for his classical spin and knack for breaking crucial partnerships.
Eligibility Criteria and Selection Process
The BCCI’s eligibility criteria for the senior selection panel require applicants to have played a minimum of seven Test matches or 30 First-Class games, or at least 10 ODIs with 20 First-Class appearances. Additionally, candidates must have retired from professional cricket for at least five years and must not have served on any BCCI cricket committee for a total of five years.
Both Ojha and RP Singh meet these requirements. Their appointments will now move through the BCCI’s formal selection process.
Interviews and Final Approval
The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), comprising Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjpe, and Sulakshna Naik, will interview shortlisted candidates before recommending two names to the BCCI office-bearers. The final appointments are expected to be approved and formalised soon.
Critical Timing for Indian Cricket
The new selectors are expected to assume their roles starting next month, coinciding with a busy international cricket calendar for Team India. Their inclusion comes at a crucial juncture, with the roadmap for future tours, ICC events, and player workload management requiring strategic planning and a fresh vision.
Cricket experts believe that Ojha and RP Singh, both respected voices in Indian cricket, could bring balance and insight to the panel’s decision-making. Their experience in international and domestic cricket is expected to play a vital role in grooming the next generation of Indian players and maintaining consistency across formats.
