Prime Minister Narendra Modi has thanked US President Donald Trump for his warm Diwali greetings and phone call.
The Indian leader said he hopes that India and the US will continue to bring light, hope, and peace to the world.
“Thank you, President Trump, for your phone call and warm Diwali greetings. On this festival of lights, may our two great democracies continue to illuminate the world with hope and stand united against terrorism in all its forms,” Modi wrote on X.
Trump Hosts Diwali Celebration at the White House
On Tuesday, President Trump celebrated Diwali at the White House, lighting a traditional diya (earthen lamp) in the Oval Office.
He described Diwali as a festival that celebrates light over darkness and good over evil.
“Lighting the Diya is a symbol of faith in the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil,” Trump said.
He added that Diwali reminds people to “seek wisdom, work with diligence, and give thanks for life’s blessings.”
A Display of Friendship and Shared Values
The phone call highlights the ongoing warm relations between Modi and Trump. The US President praised Modi as “a great person” and “a great friend.”
He said their discussion focused on trade and peace in the region.
“He’s very interested in trade. We also talked about ensuring no wars with Pakistan. That was a very good thing,” Trump said.
India has, however, reiterated that no third-party mediation was involved in the recent ceasefire understanding with Pakistan.
Backdrop: India–Pakistan Ceasefire Understanding
Tensions between India and Pakistan had risen earlier this year. In April, a terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, killed 26 people.
India responded with Operation Sindoor, targeting terror bases across the border.
Following four days of conflict, Pakistan’s military leadership reached out to India to end hostilities.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar confirmed that both nations directly agreed to a ceasefire without external involvement.
Trump’s Diwali Message to the World
President Trump also extended Diwali greetings to all Americans and people worldwide.
“Today, I send my best wishes to every American celebrating Diwali—the Festival of Lights. It’s a timeless reminder of light’s victory over darkness,” he said.
He added that Diwali brings families and friends together and strengthens hope and community spirit.
Trump’s Diwali message and his continued dialogue with PM Modi reflect the deepening India–US partnership based on shared values, cultural respect, and global cooperation.
