In a moment of historic significance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with the Order of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago—the nation’s highest civilian honour—during a special ceremony held at the President’s House in Port of Spain on July 4, 2025.
Modi is the first foreign leader to receive this prestigious award, recognising his exceptional statesmanship, commitment to the Global South, and efforts to deepen India-Trinidad & Tobago relations.
President Christine Carla Kangaloo ORTT presented the award in the presence of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, cabinet members, and dignitaries. Accepting the honour, Modi dedicated it to the 140 crore people of India, underscoring the enduring friendship between both nations, built on 180 years of shared cultural heritage.
He praised the Indian diaspora in Trinidad & Tobago for preserving traditions and customs, acknowledging them as vital ambassadors of India’s ethos. Modi also reiterated India’s commitment to strengthening strategic ties with Trinidad & Tobago as a significant partner within CARICOM and the broader Global South.
The recognition stands as a testament to India’s expanding diplomatic outreach and the cultural bonds nurtured over generations.
