A man reportedly drowned in the Indravati Mega Lift Canal near Sunamal in Kalahandi district.

The deceased has been identified as Butu Yani (45), a resident of Totapada village under Hirapur Gram Panchayat in Jayapatna Police Station jurisdiction. On Monday, Butu had gone to Pabali village to attend the funeral rites of a relative. While returning home in the evening, he went to bathe in the Sunamal lift canal, where he accidentally drowned.

Locals first noticed a pair of slippers and a towel floating near the canal, raising suspicions. On Tuesday, officials from the Jayapatna Fire Services, including OIC Bharat Karakara, Gulu Sahu, and other personnel, recovered the body from near the Chaula Dogmar canal site.

Police have launched an investigation into the matter.
