A woman succumbed to her injuries today at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, two days after her 8-year-old daughter was killed in a speeding vehicle accident near Patrapada.
Her 2-year-old son remains in critical condition.
The incident occurred on Rakhi Purnima when a Thar SUV, reportedly racing with a Scorpio on the National Highway, rammed into the family as they were crossing the road after visiting relatives. The girl died on the spot, while her mother and brother were rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
The Thar involved in the accident was later seized from Jatni. In response, outraged locals and slum residents staged a road blockade, burning tyres and demanding the construction of a foot overbridge at the accident site—a busy junction on Bhubaneswar’s outskirts.
According to sources, a speeding Mahindra Thar, allegedly racing with a Scorpio, struck the Raul family near Patrapada as they crossed the highway after visiting their relative’s house in Nandankanan on Raksha Bandhan. Eight-year-old Reshma Raul died instantly, while her mother, Rebati and younger brother Mahi were critically injured and rushed to AIIMS Bhubaneswar. Rebati succumbed to her injuries today, and Mahi remains in intensive care. Eyewitnesses said the Thar fled toward Khordha, prompting Tamando police to launch an investigation and record statements. The tragedy has sparked renewed calls for pedestrian safety measures in the busy Phuleshwari Basti area.
