Odisha government reinforces its commitment to transgender welfare by introducing monthly financial assistance for parents of transgender children under the Sweekruti scheme.
The Social Security and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (SSEPD) Department issued guidelines that grant parents or guardians Rs 1,500 every month until the child turns 18. Families must submit required documents through the Sweekruti online portal to access the benefit.
Moreover, officials highlight the initiative as a crucial step toward strengthening social security and safeguarding the rights of transgender persons. The scheme also tackles challenges faced by transgender students in accessing hostel facilities. Therefore, the government will modify existing boys’ and girls’ hostels in colleges and universities or construct new ones wherever necessary. In addition, urban local bodies and welfare organisations will help manage these hostels. Transgender residents will receive a monthly stipend of Rs 3,000.
Furthermore, the scheme expands support in education. It provides scholarships for matriculation students and extends assistance across higher levels. Transgender candidates preparing for national and state-level administrative services will also receive additional guidance and resources.
Finally, the SSEPD Department will monitor implementation through an online portal. District Social Security Officers (DSSOs) will ensure eligible beneficiaries receive benefits. At the same time, the government will conduct third-party evaluations to guarantee transparency and effectiveness.
This initiative demonstrates Odisha’s long-term vision of mainstreaming transgender persons and empowering them through education, housing, and financial support.
