Bhubaneswar: With the theme, “New Technologies for Greener Shipping” Paradip Port observed the 45th World Maritime Day, today. It reflects the need to support a green transition of the Maritime Sector into a sustainable future while leaving no one behind. Unlike National Maritime Day, there is no fixed date for the celebration of World Maritime Day.
But, generally, it is celebrated in the last week of September every year. It depends on the individual Governments to decide on a suitable date for celebration during the last week of September and DG Shipping, Govt. of India has decided and directed to celebrate World Maritime Day on 28th September 2022 in India for this year.
On this occasion, at PPA, Capt. A.C Sahu, Dy. Conservator hoisted the World Maritime Day flag at the Marine Site office in presence of HoDs of PPA, other Sr. Officials of Marine Dept. and students of Orissa Maritime Academy. Later on, the students participated in an awareness rally in the Port township.
In the evening a Seminar was held at the Officers’ Club in which Manas Beuria, Principal, Orissa Maritime Academy & Shri Babul Sikdar, Sr. Marine Engineer deliberated on the topic “New Technologies for Greener Shipping”
The first celebration of World Maritime Day was done on 17 March 1978 to mark the occasion of enforcing the first convention of IMO in 1958 and since then every year, during the last week of September, World Maritime Day is observed globally.
