Odisha has witnessed a steady rise in the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), with 1,61,338 EVs currently plying on the state’s roads, informed Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena in the State Assembly on Thursday.
Responding to a question by MLA Dhruba Charan Sahoo, the Minister revealed that EVs now account for 1.35% of the total vehicles registered in Odisha. He also highlighted that the growth rate of EV registrations in the state is on par with the national average.
Impressive Growth in EV Registrations
Odisha recorded 5,626 EV registrations in 2021, but the numbers soared by 405.63% in 2022, with 28,447 new registrations. The momentum continued as 44,545 EVs were registered in 2023 and 65,977 in 2024. So far in 2025, 10,423 EVs have been registered until March 12.
Khordha Leads, Phulbani Lags
Among districts, Khordha topped the list with 45,195 EV registrations since 2021. Cuttack followed with 19,986, while Balasore, Puri, and Sundargarh recorded 10,174, 11,287, and 10,290 registrations respectively. Phulbani district saw the lowest number of EVs registered during the period.
Government Support and Subsidies
The Minister also shared that the Odisha government has provided Rs 232.45 crore in subsidies to EV buyers from 2021 till March 5, 2025 under the Odisha Electric Vehicle Policy 2021.
Subsidies vary based on vehicle type—two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers. Additionally, state government employees are eligible for interest-free loans to purchase EVs. The government also offers road tax and registration fee exemptions for e-buses to encourage greener transportation.
The rising trend reflects the state’s growing shift towards sustainable mobility and clean energy adoption.
