Suspended IAS officer Dhiman Chakma has been granted conditional bail by the Orissa High Court in connection with a high-profile bribery case that rocked the state’s administrative circles.
Chakma was arrested by the Vigilance Department on June 8 for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 10 lakh from a businessman at his official residence. A follow-up raid led to the seizure of Rs 47,47,600 in cash from his government quarters, intensifying public scrutiny over corruption in bureaucracy.
His initial bail plea was rejected by the Bhawanipatna District Vigilance Court, prompting him to approach the High Court. After examining the matter, the HC granted bail on a bond of Rs 5 lakh with two sureties, imposing strict conditions on his release.
The case has sparked renewed debate about integrity within public service and the effectiveness of Odisha’s anti-graft mechanisms.
