The sacred Koṭha Bhoga offered to Lord Jagannath will feature organic rice starting from the upcoming Rath Yatra 2025.
Odisha’s Principal Secretary of Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment, Arabinda Padhee, announced the initiative to promote sustainable agriculture across the state.
The rice will come from the Balabhadra Organic Farming Mission, which encourages chemical-free cultivation in districts like Niali and Koraput. Farmers participating in the Shree Anna program have already adopted organic paddy farming. The Pragati Organisation in Koraput will supply the rice, branded as ‘Amrut Anna,’ for the temple offering.
The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) approved the proposal during a recent meeting chaired by Padhee. By introducing organic rice into Mahaprasad preparation, the state aims to blend eco-conscious practices with religious customs.
Officials believe this move will elevate the purity of Koṭha Bhoga and inspire more farmers to embrace organic methods. Moreover, the initiative supports Odisha’s broader mission to align health, sustainability, and tradition.
As preparations for Rath Yatra begin, the use of organic rice marks a significant step toward environmentally responsible temple rituals. The state continues to lead efforts in integrating agriculture reforms with cultural heritage.
