The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded an Orange Warning for four districts in Odisha — Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, and Sambalpur — forecasting intense rainfall ranging from 12 to 20 cm in isolated pockets.
Simultaneously, a Yellow Warning has been issued for Mayurbhanj, Deogarh, Angul, Sonepur, and Bargarh districts. These regions are likely to experience moderate to heavy showers triggered by active low-pressure systems over eastern and western Odisha.
According to the Bhubaneswar regional meteorological centre, the revived southwest monsoon has led to a 29% increase in state-wide rainfall coverage in just three days. As of June 15, the state had recorded 42.9 mm rainfall, marking a 42% shortfall. But conditions turned around swiftly due to intensified cyclonic circulation and active monsoon dynamics.
With two low-pressure areas forming over the Gangetic West Bengal region and southern Gujarat, Odisha is poised for significant rainfall activity in the coming days. The IMD has advised residents and district administrations to remain vigilant, particularly in regions with poor drainage and landslide-prone zones.
Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and have mobilised disaster response teams to ensure swift action if needed.
