Odisha’s dairy sector received a significant boost as the Odisha State Cooperative Milk Producers’ Federation (OMFED) announced a Rs 3 per litre increase in milk procurement rates for farmers, effective June 1, 2025.

The decision, unveiled by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi during the state-level World Milk Day 2025 celebrations, aims to empower dairy farmers across the state.

Under the initiative, farmers will receive an additional Rs 3 per litre, with Rs 2 contributed through the Chief Minister’s Kamadhenu Yojana and Rs 2 from OMFED’s existing revenue. Milk societies and federations will also benefit, receiving Rs 1 per litre. Notably, consumer milk prices will remain unchanged, pending a committee’s detailed review.

Addressing the media today regarding the incentive, OMFED Managing Director Vijay Amruta Kulange stated that a final decision on consumer prices will be made within 15-20 days after thorough discussions.

In a landmark achievement, OMFED reported a record turnover of ₹1,028 crore in the 2024-25 financial year, a substantial rise from ₹855 crore in 2023-24, marking an increase of ₹170 crore. This growth underscores OMFED’s pivotal role in strengthening Odisha’s dairy industry.

Adding to the momentum, Chief Minister Majhi launched three new OMFED products during the World Milk Day event, catering to growing consumer demand. These include a 1 kg plain curd bucket, Binjharpuri desi cow A2 ghee in 175 ml and 350 ml packs, and Binjharpuri desi cow A2 milk in 500 ml glass bottles with a 90-day shelf life. According to the Managing Director, OMFED plans to introduce more innovative products in the coming months.

The state government’s Kamadhenu Yojana continues to transform the dairy landscape, benefiting 2.5 lakh farmers with the Rs 3 per litre incentive. This initiative will cost the state Rs 40-42 crore annually. Additionally, Chief Minister Majhi announced a Rs 1 lakh accident death assistance for OMFED dairy farmers, alongside support for buffalo rearing, calf nurturing, cattle insurance, cash incentives, and fodder cultivation.

To date, 3 lakh cattle and buffalo farmers have availed benefits under Kamadhenu Yojana, receiving Rs 71 crore in subsidies (50-70% discounts). The state aims to include 15 lakh people in the scheme over the next five years, doubling milk production and creating widespread rural employment.

OMFED and dairy farmers expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister for these measures, which promise to make Odisha self-reliant in milk production. As the state celebrates these milestones, OMFED’s record growth, farmer support, and innovative products signal a bright future for Odisha’s dairy sector.
