Odisha’s vibrant cultural heritage took centre stage as the state-level Gotipua Dance Festival concluded today at the Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Odissi Research Centre.
The event, a celebration of the traditional Gotipua dance form, showcased the artistry of performers and underscored the state’s commitment to preserving and promoting this iconic cultural practice.
Odisha’s Minister for Odia Language, Literature, and Culture, Suryabanshi Suraj, emphasised that financial constraints will not hinder the development of Gotipua. Speaking at the festival’s closing ceremony, he announced plans to provide financial assistance to Gotipua gurukuls, ensuring they are empowered and modernised while preserving the dance’s authenticity.
“Gotipua is the identity of our Odia pride and a symbol of our rich dance tradition,” he said. “We will strengthen the guru-shishya tradition, encourage the younger generation to learn this art, and integrate our traditional dance into educational curricula based on the National Education Policy.”
The festival, held from August 30 to September 1, was organised by the Odia Language, Literature, and Culture Department in collaboration with the Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Odissi Research Centre, Odisha Sangeet Natak Academy, and Lokakala Sangha. Over 20 dance troupes participated, captivating audiences with their skilful performances. A highlight of the closing ceremony was an inspiring performance by 83-year-old Guru Bhagirathi Mahapatra, which left the audience in awe and highlighted the timeless appeal of Gotipua.
The event also featured a discussion session titled “Originality and Costumes of Gotipua,” exploring ways to preserve the dance’s essence while adapting it to contemporary times. Minister Suraj honoured eminent gurus and scholars, including Guru Gobind Chandra Pal, Guru Dhaneswar Swain, Dr. Chittaranjan Mallia, Guru Satyapriya Palai, Dr. Snehaprabha Samantaray, and Guru Nilachal Mahapatra, for their contributions to the art form.
Performances by groups such as Dashabhuja Gotipua Nritya Parishad, Lakshmipriya Gotipua Nritya Kendra, Swatishree Gotipua and Odissi Nritya Parishad, Nakshatra Gurukul Trust, Abhinna Sundar Gotipua, and Kasada Gotipua enthralled attendees, showcasing the vibrancy and diversity of Gotipua.
The closing ceremony was graced by notable figures, including Padmashri Kumkum Mohanty, Secretary of the Odia Language, Literature, and Culture Department, Dr. Bijay Ketan Upadhyaya, and Vice-Chancellor of Utkal University of Culture Professor Prasanna Kumar Swain. The event was skillfully moderated by Shuchismita Mantri, Administrative Officer of the Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Odissi Research Centre.
The festival not only celebrated Gotipua’s cultural significance but also highlighted its role as a medium for a healthy lifestyle and a guiding light for Odisha’s cultural legacy. With government support and modernisation efforts, Gotipua is poised to inspire future generations while retaining its traditional roots.
