Odisha Vigilance today caught Niranjan Singh, Revenue Inspector (RI) of Keshari Nagar Circle, Unit-VI, Bhubaneswar, red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000.
The enforcement action followed a complaint by a local resident who was struggling to secure a legal heir certificate after the tragic deaths of his mother and younger brother. The applicant had submitted an online application on September 9, 2026, complete with all necessary documents. Despite visiting the RI office multiple times over the past month, the accused official allegedly delayed forwarding the mandatory enquiry report to higher authorities, demanding a Rs 5,000 payoff to clear the file.
Refusing to yield to extortion during a period of personal loss, the citizen reported the bribe demand to the Odisha Vigilance authorities. A trap was laid, resulting in Singh being apprehended immediately upon receiving the marked bribe money from the complainant.
Following the successful trap, Vigilance sleuths initiated simultaneous searches at two locations linked to the accused Revenue Inspector to investigate potential Disproportionate Assets (DA).
A formal case has been registered at the Bhubaneswar Vigilance Police Station (Bhubaneswar Vigilance P.S. Case No. 22/2026) under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018. Further investigation against the accused official is currently underway.
