In a move aimed at enhancing food security for the underprivileged, ration card holders in Odisha may soon receive an extra 5 kg of rice every month.
Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra shared this update through media channels, emphasising the state’s commitment to addressing nutritional needs amid rising living costs.
The minister highlighted that the current allocation of 5 kg of rice per person under central schemes often falls short for most low-income households. “We are contemplating doubling this to 10 kg at the state’s own expense to ensure no family goes hungry,” Patra stated. The final call rests with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who is expected to review the proposal soon.
Patra underscored the government’s intent to prioritise the welfare of the poor, with plans to extend the benefit to all 3.25 crore ration card holders across the state. The Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Department has already drafted a comprehensive proposal and forwarded it to the CM’s office for approval. If greenlit, this initiative could mark a significant overhaul in Odisha’s food security framework, providing supplementary aid on top of the 5 kg rice distributed under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY).
In related developments, the state has enforced mandatory e-KYC for ration cardholders to streamline distribution and curb misuse. Approximately 15.67 lakh beneficiaries who have yet to complete the process will be barred from receiving their monthly rice quota starting next month. However, Patra assured that Odisha would align with any deadline extensions announced by the central government, offering a grace period if needed.
