Puri: The Odisha government has proposed the launch of the ‘Amrut Anna’ project to ensure that Lord Jagannath’s Mahaprasad at Puri Srimandir is prepared using organic rice and vegetables, free from chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
The initiative has received strong support from the servitors of the Jagannath Temple and the temple administration. A consultation meeting was recently held at Krushi Bhavan, led by Arabinda Padhee, Secretary of Agriculture and Farmers Empowerment and Chief Administrator of Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA).
Currently, Mahaprasad ingredients such as rice, vegetables, and pulses are sourced from the local market. The project aims to replace these with organic alternatives. Initially, traditional rice varieties like Kalajeera, Pimpudibasa, and Jubaraja—all grown in Odisha—will be used. Notably, Kalajeera rice has already received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
Officials believe that promoting organic farming, including the use of cow dung and cow urine as natural fertilizers, will support sustainable agriculture and contribute to cattle population growth in the state.
The Suar-Mahasuar Nijog, responsible for preparing Mahaprasad, has welcomed this move, recognizing its importance in maintaining the sacred purity of the offering.
