The Health and Family Welfare Department of Odisha has bolstered its strategies to tackle the impending heatwave season, ensuring public health safety during extreme temperatures.
Under the guidance of Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Mukesh Mahaling, a review meeting led by Dr. Nilakantha Mishra, Director of Public Health, outlined measures to safeguard citizens against heat-related health risks.
The department emphasised readiness across all 30 districts, with medical facilities equipped to handle heat-related cases. Adequate stocks of intravenous fluids, Oral Rehydration Solutions (ORS), medicines, air coolers, and power backup systems have been ensured. Special training programs for healthcare workers have been enhanced, incorporating grassroots teams to provide swift responses in remote areas.
Dr. Mishra also highlighted the department’s focus on vulnerable populations in heat-prone regions, particularly mining zones. Additional resources and protections have been allocated to these communities. An intensive Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaign is being rolled out to educate the public on precautionary measures during heat waves.
“We are confident in our preparedness to address the challenges posed by the heatwave season,” stated Dr. Mishra. “Through coordinated efforts across healthcare sectors, district teams, and public cooperation, we aim to minimise the impact of extreme heat on the people of Odisha.”
Prominent figures, including Dr. Basant Pradhan (Nodal Officer for Heat-Related Illnesses) and Dr. Ashok Paikray (State Surveillance Officer), along with district medical officers and public health officials, participated in the review meeting. The event showcased the government’s commitment to holistic and timely action against heatwave challenges.
