Odisha is expected to get relief from the sweltering heat as meteorologists predict the arrival of Kalbaisakhi storms between March 20 and 26.

The anticipated rainfall and thunderstorms across multiple districts could bring a 4-5 degree Celsius drop in temperatures, offering respite from the ongoing heatwave.

Weather Shift & Forecast
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributes this weather transition to a cyclonic circulation and trap line, which will trigger pre-monsoon activity known locally as Kalbaisakhi (Nor’wester)—a phenomenon known for its intense thunderstorms and gusty winds.

Though cooler conditions are expected from March 20, heatwave conditions will persist until March 19, prompting authorities to issue severe warnings.

Current Heatwave Conditions & Warnings
As Odisha endures extreme heat, a Red Alert remains in effect for Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Kalahandi, Sonepur, and Boudh until March 19. An Orange Warning has been issued for Angul, Balangir, and Sundargarh, indicating significant risk due to high temperatures. Additionally, a Yellow Warning is in place for Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, and Gajapati, signaling less extreme but still dangerous conditions.

Relief on the Horizon
While Odisha continues to battle extreme heat for the next two days, the Kalbaisakhi storms are expected to bring much-needed rainfall and a temperature drop, easing conditions across the state.
