The Bhubaneswar Metro Rail project has reached a significant milestone with the launch of precast construction at a dedicated facility, marking a crucial step toward expediting infrastructure development.
Accelerating Metro Construction
According to The Times of India, the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has commenced operations at its precasting workshop and coach maintenance depot to streamline work on the 26-km-long elevated corridor. This development follows the state government’s decision to form a high-level committee to oversee metro planning and execution.
What is Precasting & Why It Matters?
The precasting facility is manufacturing pillars and columns, significantly reducing on-site construction time and ensuring better quality control. The metro route will connect Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneswar to Trisulia in Cuttack, featuring 20 stations and is expected to be completed by December 2027.
Metro Infrastructure & Future Plans
The first phase of the metro, costing ₹6,255.94 crore, will serve key commercial, educational, and healthcare hubs in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. A 40-acre metro maintenance depot and Command & Control Centre (CCC) are being developed in Ratagada Lenkasahi, Baranga, with a budget of ₹300 crore.
BMRCL has already awarded contracts for various metro stretches, ensuring financial stability for uninterrupted progress. Structural construction for elevated tracks will begin in April, following the completion of soil testing at multiple locations. The metro will initially operate with 13 three-coach trains, with plans for expansion based on demand.
