Odisha Police has initiated a massive state-wide operation targeting illegal sand and minor mineral operations, aiming to dismantle the sand mining mafia that poses a significant threat to local resources and communities.
The crackdown, directed by Odisha Police Director General YB Khurania, involved senior police officials conducting extensive raids across various districts. The operation led to the confiscation of 136 vehicles, including tractors, trucks, and tippers, all involved in unauthorized sand transportation. Law enforcement registered 119 cases and arrested 123 individuals during Sunday’s raids.
The police are committed to maintaining the momentum of these operations to curb illegal sand smuggling. Authorities have urged the public to report any suspicious sand or morum (gravelly soil) trade activities in their areas.
By collaborating with law enforcement, communities can play a pivotal role in safeguarding vital environmental and economic resources from exploitation by the sand mining mafia.
