A four-member team from the Balasore district administration in Odisha has reached Durgapur to meet the medical student who was allegedly gang-raped near a private medical college in West Bengal’s Paschim Bardhaman district.
The team, led by District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO) Jyotsna Mohanty and a Deputy Superintendent of Police, visited the hospital on Saturday and interacted with the survivor and her family members.
Odisha Officials Meet Survivor in Hospital
Speaking to the media, DSWO Jyotsna Mohanty said that the survivor’s condition is gradually improving. She confirmed that the district administration is providing all necessary assistance.
“The survivor is a native of Balasore district. We have come here to review her condition and provide support. She is stable now. The Odisha government stands firmly with the family. We are in constant coordination with the West Bengal Police,” Mohanty said.
The team is also scheduled to meet local police officials to review the progress of the investigation and the medical support being provided to the survivor.
NCW Calls for Swift Justice
Archana Majumdar, a member of the National Commission for Women (NCW), also met the survivor at the hospital. She expressed concern over the situation in West Bengal and called for strict action against the culprits.
“The law and order situation in West Bengal has completely deteriorated. The state government must ensure speedy justice,” Majumdar said.
Odisha CM Speaks With Survivor’s Father
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi spoke with the survivor’s father on Saturday, assuring him of complete government support.
He said that the Odisha government will provide medical, legal, and logistical assistance to the survivor and her family. Majhi also stated that a senior Odisha official has been assigned to coordinate with West Bengal authorities.
“The accused must face the strictest punishment under the law. Our government will ensure the survivor receives full care and support,” Majhi said.
Police Investigation and Arrests
According to police sources, three accused have been arrested within 36 hours of the incident. However, two more suspects remain absconding.
The crime took place near the private medical college campus late Friday night. The survivor, a second-year MBBS student from Jaleswar in Balasore district, is now stable and under treatment in Durgapur.
The assault has triggered nationwide outrage, with students, rights groups, and women’s organizations demanding justice and stronger safety measures on college campuses.
