West Bengal Leader of Opposition and BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari on Monday launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the alleged gangrape of an Odisha-origin medical student in Durgapur.
Adhikari accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government of shielding those responsible and putting pressure on the investigation.
“Trinamool hatao, beti bachao — this is the main slogan everywhere in Bengal. Trinamool should go,” Adhikari said while speaking to reporters.
He alleged that state authorities were trying to suppress the case, claiming that the Durgapur medical college administration was being intimidated.
“They don’t allow the Leader of Opposition to talk with doctors. They blocked the Women’s Commission from Odisha. The private college authority called me at 8 am, saying they are under pressure. Whose pressure? Mamata’s pressure, Mamata’s police pressure, Mamata’s goons’ pressure,” he alleged.
The BJP leader’s comments came amid growing criticism of the state government after Mamata Banerjee’s controversial remarks questioning why the survivor was outside late at night. The Chief Minister later said her comments were “distorted by the media.”
Police have arrested all five accused in the case, and the survivor, a second-year MBBS student from Jaleswar in Odisha, is undergoing treatment at the hospital.
