Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) identified 47,126 stray dogs across the city during a comprehensive census conducted in two phases between September 18 and 25.

Officials recorded 23,047 male dogs, 15,552 female dogs, and 1,124 puppies.

The survey revealed that stray dogs make up 3.62% of Bhubaneswar’s total population. BMC teams also reported that 4,068 male and 3,335 female dogs have undergone sterilization procedures to control the growing numbers.

The census aimed to provide accurate data for planning future animal birth control programs and improving urban safety. BMC deployed teams across all zones to ensure thorough coverage and reliable statistics.

Veterinary officials emphasized the importance of sterilization in managing the stray dog population. They noted that sterilized dogs tend to be less aggressive and healthier, reducing risks for both residents and animals.

BMC plans to expand sterilization drives and collaborate with animal welfare organizations to address the issue. The civic body also urged citizens to support responsible pet ownership and avoid feeding stray dogs in public areas without supervision.

This large-scale survey marks a significant step in Bhubaneswar’s urban animal management strategy. Authorities believe that consistent monitoring and community participation will help create a safer and more humane environment for both people and animals.
