As relentless downpours continue to batter large swathes of Odisha under the influence of a deep depression, students across the state may have to wait a little longer before returning to their classrooms.
School and Mass Education Minister Nityananda Gond indicated that the current school closures could be extended by another one to two days if heavy rainfall persists.
Several district administrations have already declared a two-day holiday to prioritise student safety amid flooded roads and waterlogged premises. However, with meteorologists predicting continued rain, local authorities are closely monitoring ground conditions to decide on further extensions.
“The academic calendar is facing frequent disruptions due to incessant rain, and students’ studies have certainly been hampered,” Minister Gond stated. He assured parents and students that extra classes would be scheduled to compensate for the lost academic days once weather conditions stabilize.
Southern Odisha has borne the brunt of the weather system, with seven districts experiencing severe rainfall and localised flooding. Rather than issuing a state-wide blanket order, the government has authorised individual District Collectors to assess local flood levels and safety risks before deciding on school operational status.
Parents and guardians are advised to monitor official communications from their respective district administrations for localised updates.
