Christmas celebrations began across Odisha with deep religious devotion and festive spirit, as churches witnessed large congregations during traditional midnight prayers marking the birth of Jesus Christ.

Churches across the state remained crowded until late hours, with members of the Christian community gathering to participate in special midnight services. The observances symbolised faith, unity, and reverence, setting a spiritual tone for the festival.

Following prayers and readings from the Bible, worshippers exchanged greetings and extended warm wishes, reflecting the message of peace and goodwill associated with Christmas.

Midnight Services Draw Large Gatherings

In Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, churches reported steady attendance from the evening onwards, with devotees participating in midnight masses. The services featured hymns, prayers, and scriptural readings recounting the nativity of Jesus Christ.

Worshippers were seen offering prayers before symbolic representations of the infant Jesus, expressing devotion and gratitude.

Similar scenes were observed in Puri and Rourkela, where churches remained illuminated and active well past midnight. Large gatherings attended the traditional services, which hold special religious significance during Christmas.

Churches Decorated with Lights and Nativity Scenes

Church premises across Odisha were adorned with colourful lights, stars, Christmas trees, balloons, and decorative arches, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Nativity scenes depicting the birth of Jesus Christ were set up using figurines and thatched structures, recreating the biblical setting. These displays attracted devotees, many of whom paused to offer prayers and pay homage. As a gesture of faith, some believers were seen kissing the symbolic figures of the infant Jesus.

Kandhamal and Phulbani See Enthusiastic Celebrations

In Kandhamal district, Christmas was celebrated with particular enthusiasm at the Daringbadi Catholic Church, where Christian families gathered in large numbers.

Priests conducted special services followed by Bible readings and prayers. Devotees welcomed the infant Jesus with hymns and devotional songs, creating a spiritually uplifting environment.

Celebrations Continue Through the Day

With the conclusion of midnight services, Christmas celebrations are set to continue throughout the day. Families are visiting churches, exchanging greetings, and participating in community gatherings.

Church authorities confirmed that prayer services and masses are scheduled at various intervals on Thursday, allowing believers to continue marking the occasion with devotion and reflection.
