In a heartbreaking incident that underscores the devastating consequences of domestic disputes, a couple died after both consumed pesticide in a remote forest area. Their five-year-old son spent the entire night alone, watching over his deceased father and unconscious mother before seeking help the next morning.
The victims have been identified as Dushmant Majhi and his wife, Rinki Majhi, residents of Jianantapali village under the Kundheigola police station in Deogarh district. According to police reports, the couple was returning home on their bike from Rinki’s parental home on Saturday evening, accompanied by their young son. A prior argument between the spouses escalated during the journey, leading them to stop near Dalak village and venture into a secluded forest patch.
In a moment of despair, both Dushmant and Rinki ingested a poisonous pesticide. The child, witnessing the ordeal, was left helpless as his father succumbed to the poison shortly after, while his mother fell unconscious. With night falling, the terrified boy remained by their side throughout the dark hours, unable to seek immediate assistance.
It was only on Sunday morning that the child emerged from the forest and flagged down passersby on the road, recounting the tragedy. Locals promptly alerted the Khairpali outpost of Kundheigola police station. Officers arrived at the scene around 10 AM and rescued the family, rushing them to Chhendipada hospital in neighbouring Angul district.
Doctors at the hospital declared Dushmant dead on arrival. Rinki, in grave condition, was transferred to the Angul District Headquarters Hospital for advanced treatment. However, she succumbed. As a precaution, the child is also undergoing medical care, with suspicions that he may have accidentally ingested some of the poison.
Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the quarrel and the suicide attempt. Initial inquiries suggest deep-seated marital issues, though no foul play is suspected at this stage.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting the urgent need for mental health support and conflict resolution resources in rural areas.
