On the occasion of the 42nd Foundation Day of the State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) in Bhubaneswar, Odisha Governor Dr Hari Babu Kambhampati emphasised the critical need for widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) to curb pollution and reduce reliance on fossil fuels in Odisha’s rapidly urbanising cities.

Speaking as the chief guest at the event, the Governor highlighted the importance of collective action to ensure environmental protection and a healthier future for citizens.

Dr Kambhampati commended the SPCB for its four-decade-long journey as a regulator, guide, and partner in balancing rapid industrialisation with environmental responsibility. “Today is not just a milestone but a celebration of the Board’s holistic and progressive approach to safeguarding Odisha’s environment,” the Governor remarked. Citing the transformation of the Raj Bhavan’s official car fleet to EVs, which has significantly reduced carbon emissions, the Governor urged others to follow this example.

Encouraging sustainable practices, the Governor called on citizens to install solar systems at home, noting that such measures not only lower electricity bills but also promote clean energy. Citizens can also benefit from government subsidies under relevant schemes. He further praised the SPCB’s efforts in improving air quality, river restoration, and real-time monitoring of industrial and waterbody activities.

The Governor also invited citizens and students to actively participate in a massive tree plantation drive organised by the state government on September 17, 2025. This initiative aims to expand green cover, improve air quality, and mitigate the impacts of climate change. The Governor lauded state initiatives like the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, e-bus programs, EV subsidies, interest-free loans, and rooftop solar installations.

Describing pollution as a serious threat to health, livelihoods, and future generations, Dr Kambhampati advised the public to reduce plastic use, manage e-waste, conserve water, plant trees, and adopt renewable energy.

The Governor encouraged the SPCB to envision bold goals for the next decade, including promoting green technology, zero-waste industries, youth engagement, and leveraging digital tools for environmental monitoring.

Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, in his address, stressed the need for collective responsibility to achieve pollution control and sustainable development. Additional Chief Secretary of the Forest, Environment, and Climate Change Department, Satyabrata Sahu, also spoke at the event. Senior officials, including Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) and Head of Forest Force Suresh Pant, and PCCF Prem Kumar Jha, were present.

During the event, the Governor launched three SPCB websites and publications. Sand artist Manas Kumar Sahu was honoured, and awards for Pollution Control Excellence and Appreciation were presented to outstanding institutions. Women were also recognised for their contributions to nature conservation and green entrepreneurship.
