The Odisha government has announced the expansion of its successful Town Planning (TP) scheme to three additional cities: Puri-Konark, Cuttack, and Berhampur.
This initiative aims to replicate the transformative urban development observed in Bhubaneswar.
In a strategic meeting led by Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mohapatra, the decision was made to implement the TP scheme in these cities. The ‘Triple City’ initiative focuses on systematic expansion and infrastructure enhancement in Puri, Konark, and Cuttack. The scheme involves acquiring 40% of land from residents to develop roads, drainage systems, electricity networks, markets, and parks, while the remaining 60% stays with the landowners.
Minister Mohapatra emphasized the need for swift execution of the revised scheme and highlighted the importance of protecting residents from exploitation by intermediaries. He stated, “We are committed to implementing this scheme effectively and ensuring that the benefits reach the rightful owners without any undue influence.”
This expansion is part of Odisha’s broader strategy to increase planned townships from the current 17% to 30% of urban areas. The government plans to build new cities and revitalize existing ones to facilitate urbanization and improve living standards. The successful implementation of the TP scheme by the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) serves as a model for this initiative.
The ‘Triple City’ plan also includes the development of additional flyovers and ring roads to address traffic congestion resulting from the growing number of residents and pilgrims. This comprehensive approach aims to enhance land management and develop essential infrastructure across these cities, positioning Odisha as a leader in urban development.
