A severe cold wave continues to affect Odisha, with minimum temperatures dipping below 10°C in more than 10 cities and dense fog worsening conditions across several districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated no immediate relief, with cold conditions likely to persist until at least early January.
Cold Wave Tightens Grip Across the State
Several locations in Kandhamal, Koraput, Rourkela, Jharsuguda, and Nabarangpur recorded notably low temperatures, making outdoor movement uncomfortable, especially during early mornings and late evenings. The combination of biting cold and prolonged fog has disrupted daily routines for many residents.
Dense Fog Likely for the Next Five Days
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar, dense fog is expected in parts of Odisha over the next five days. A fog warning has been issued for Sundargarh, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, and Koraput for Sunday and Monday.
Coastal, southern, and interior regions may also experience intermittent dense fog during this period.
Visibility Concerns in Interior Districts
While coastal districts such as Puri, Kendrapara, and Ganjam have reported fog, visibility has largely remained manageable so far. In contrast, interior districts experienced reduced visibility, prompting advisories for motorists to drive cautiously, particularly at night and during early morning hours.
Cold Conditions to Extend Into Early January
Weather officials noted that no significant respite is expected before January 3. A slight rise in temperatures may follow, but winter chill is likely to continue across much of the state.
Public Advisory
Authorities urge everyone—especially older adults, children, and people commuting during fog-prone hours—to take necessary precautions, stay warm, and plan travel carefully.
