In a significant step toward preserving tribal culture and heritage, a delegation of Santali language experts and organizational coordinators met Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi at his official residence today.
The delegation submitted a memorandum outlining crucial measures for the promotion, recognition, and academic integration of the Santali language using the Ol Chiki script.
During the discussion, Chief Minister Majhi gave a patient and sympathetic hearing to all points presented by the committee. Highlighting the global pride surrounding tribal identity, the Chief Minister remarked that having Smt. Droupadi Murmu, a Santali woman, occupies the nation’s highest constitutional office as President of India is a matter of immense pride for the entire country. He noted that her position has elevated the prestige and visibility of Santali language, culture, and tribal identity worldwide.
The expert committee presented several key demands, including:
- Minority Language Status: Official minority language status and educational facilities for Santali in the Ol Chiki script.
- NEP 2020 Integration: Implementation of Santali under the Three-Language Formula from Classes 1 to 10, as well as an MIL and Elective subject at the Higher Secondary level.
- Academic & Infrastructure Support: Dedicated teacher recruitment drives for Santali and special seat reservations for B.Ed programs at Teacher Education Colleges in Baripada, Balasore, and Anandapur.
Reassuring the delegation, CM Majhi emphasized that the Odisha government remains firmly committed to protecting and promoting tribal languages and literature. He assured the representatives that positive and prompt steps would be taken based on the recommendations of the expert committee to ensure the holistic development of the Santali community.
The delegation featured prominent figures, including Padma Shri Dr. Damayanti Beshra, Central Sahitya Akademi Coordinator Chaitanya Majhi, former Baisinga MLA Kandra Soren, former IAS officer Dhananjay Hembram, Dr. Naku Hansdah, former IRS officer Udayanath Majhi, and Somnath Hansdah, among other language experts.
