A high-level meeting chaired by Odisha’s Chief Secretary, Anu Garg, was held today at Lok Seva Bhawan to discuss strategies for enhancing participation in the Indian Army’s Agniveer recruitment for 2026.
The focus was on disseminating information widely about the scheme and facilitating easier registrations for the state’s eligible young men and women to join the armed forces.
The meeting, conducted in the conference hall of Lok Seva Bhawan, emphasised the need for greater involvement from Odisha’s youth in the Indian Army. Attendees included State Development Commissioner and Additional Chief Secretary Deo Ranjan Kumar Singh, Higher Education Commissioner and Secretary Arvind Agrawal, Director of Technical Education and Training Chakrabarti Singh Rathore, Colonel Prasanna from the Army Recruiting Board in Cuttack, and Major Ashwini. District collectors from all districts participated virtually.
Discussions covered key aspects of the Agniveer program, including the Common Entrance Examination, training protocols, and salary structures. It was noted that while other states see high Agniveer registrations leading to more recruitment slots, Odisha has lagged behind with lower numbers. This has resulted in fewer positions allocated to the state under the army recruitment rules.
A review of the past decade’s data and the current year’s registration status revealed that as of March 5, 2026, a total of 6,044 young individuals from Odisha have registered. This breaks down to 1,770 from northern districts, 2,583 from coastal areas, and 1,691 from southern regions. The Join Indian Army website has been open for registrations since February 13 and will remain active until April 1, 2026.
In the 2025-26 cycle, 8,664 candidates from Odisha qualified for the entrance exam, with 1,477 ultimately selected as Agniveers. To inspire participation, the meeting highlighted success stories from Odisha, such as Sarojini Das, Satyaban Das, and Manaswini Das—a family where two daughters and one son have joined the army.
The state’s strong sports culture was also spotlighted, with participants noting that youth excelling in sports can leverage certificates from recognised institutions for easier army enlistment. Increased army recruitment from Odisha would bolster national security and defence capabilities.
With less than a month left for registrations, the meeting stressed the urgency of ramping up efforts. District employment officers were advised to play a pivotal role. Departments like Skill Development and Technical Education, Higher Education, School and Mass Education, Panchayati Raj, and Drinking Water were directed to take proactive steps to boost enrollments. Utilising Mo Seva Kendras and Common Service Centres for facilitation was also discussed.
To raise awareness among the youth, extensive campaigns via social media, print, and electronic channels were recommended. Suggestions included setting up registration assistance kiosks at every tehsil level, encouraging colleges and ITIs to motivate students, and using WhatsApp groups and other digital platforms for information dissemination.
Additionally, district administrations were urged to collaborate on organising army recruitment rallies and awareness programs more broadly. Regular district-level reviews were advised. Data entry operators from colleges and ITIs will be involved in the process, with necessary training provided by the army recruitment offices. Army Recruiting Officers (AROs) plan to conduct video conferences with multiple colleges simultaneously to enhance outreach.
The initiative aims to transform Odisha’s low registration trends into a robust pipeline of Agniveers, providing employment opportunities while strengthening the nation’s armed forces.
