According to the Meteorological Centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Bhubaneswar, Odisha is set to experience widespread rainfall throughout the coming week.
An upper-air cyclonic circulation over North Thailand is expected to move into the North Andaman Sea by Saturday morning, triggering the formation of a low-pressure area by the evening of September 19.
The system is forecast to gradually intensify as it moves west-northwestward toward the South Odisha and North Andhra Pradesh coasts over the next 3 to 4 days.
Rainfall Predictions and Warnings
Rainfall activity is expected to pick up significantly across the state following a period of weak monsoon activity. Over the past 24 hours, Odisha recorded an average rainfall of 2.9 mm, which is 69% below normal.

Saturday (September 19): Thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rain and wind speeds of 30–40 km/h are expected across the entire state.

Sunday and Monday: Yellow warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms remain active for eastern and southern regions.

Tuesday to Thursday: Orange alerts for heavy to very heavy rainfall have been issued for three consecutive days, particularly affecting western and southwestern districts like Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamala, Rayagada, Koraput, and Malkangiri.
Depression Threat and Advisory
IMD meteorologists expect the system to concentrate into a depression, though it remains too early to confirm whether it will develop into a cyclone. The weather department is actively monitoring the system and will release regular updates.
Residents in low-lying areas, riverbanks, and hilly regions are advised to remain alert, while fishermen have been urged to verify sea conditions before venturing out.
