A nurse was found dead at her rented accommodation in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday, prompting a police investigation into allegations of prolonged mental harassment and blackmail. Authorities have detained her former boyfriend and are also questioning her live-in partner as part of the ongoing probe.
The deceased has been identified as Sasmita, a native of Balangir district, who was working as a nurse in Bhubaneswar. She was staying in a rented house in the Damana area under the jurisdiction of Chandrasekharpur Police Station along with her live-in partner, Mahesh Nath.
According to police, Sasmita was found hanging inside the rented house. Her body was recovered and sent for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
As part of the investigation, police initially detained Mahesh Nath and later brought Sasmita’s former boyfriend, Paramananda, in for questioning after preliminary findings suggested he may have been in contact with her before her death.
Investigators are examining allegations that Paramananda had been mentally harassing and blackmailing Sasmita after learning about her live-in relationship. Police are currently verifying these claims and have not yet confirmed whether any offence related to abetment has been established.
To gather more evidence, officers have seized Sasmita’s mobile phone. Digital forensic experts are analysing call records, text messages, chat histories and other electronic data to reconstruct the events leading up to her death.
Police have registered an unnatural death case and said the investigation remains underway. Officials added that all possible angles, including allegations of mental harassment, personal disputes and digital evidence, are being examined before any conclusions are drawn.
