A dramatic police encounter unfolded in Sambalpur’s Rengiatikra area late Saturday night, resulting in the apprehension of Sitaram Shadangi, a notorious criminal with a long history of terrorizing the region.
The Sambalpur Police, acting on credible intelligence, engaged Shadangi in an operation that left him seriously injured after being shot in the left leg. He was immediately rushed to a hospital in Burla, where he is currently receiving treatment for his injuries.
Sitaram Shadangi, a name synonymous with fear in Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, and Sundargarh districts, has been linked to over 25 criminal cases, including charges of dacoity, robbery, looting, and attempted murder. According to police reports, Shadangi has been a menace in the region for years, with multiple cases registered against him across various police stations. His arrest marks a significant breakthrough for law enforcement in their ongoing efforts to curb organized crime in Western Odisha.
During the encounter, the police recovered a country-made pistol, identified in images as a Desert Eagle, along with 1 lakh rupees in cash from Shadangi’s possession. The Desert Eagle, a powerful gas-operated semi-automatic pistol typically chambered for large calibers like .50 Action Express, is an unusual weapon for a local criminal, raising questions about potential connections to larger arms trafficking networks in the region.
The operation has been hailed as a success by the Sambalpur Police, who have been under pressure to address the rising crime rates in the area. “Sitaram Shadangi was a major threat to public safety, and his arrest sends a strong message to other criminals operating in the region,” a senior police official stated. Further investigations are underway to uncover Shadangi’s network and the source of the recovered firearm.
This encounter comes amid heightened concerns over crime in Odisha, with the state grappling with issues like human trafficking and organized crime in recent years. The police action in Sambalpur is seen as a step toward restoring law and order in the region, though it also underscores the challenges authorities face in tackling deeply entrenched criminal networks.
