A notorious criminal was injured during a police encounter in Odisha’s Bhadrak district early Tuesday morning while officers attempted to arrest him following a tip-off.

The accused, identified as Kamalakant Das, alias Budhia, sustained a gunshot wound to his right leg during the exchange of fire and was later admitted to Bhadrak District Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

Encounter Following Tip-Off

According to police officials, the incident occurred near the Charampa malgodown area at around 5:15 am. Bhadrak Town Police had received intelligence inputs around 5:00 am that Budhia was moving through the area on a motorcycle along with an associate.

Acting on the information, a six-member police team, led by the Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) of Bhadrak Town Police Station, rushed to the location to intercept the suspects.

Exchange of Fire

Police stated that when the team attempted to stop Budhia, he allegedly opened fire at the police personnel, including the IIC. In response, police retaliated, and one bullet struck Budhia in the leg.

His associate reportedly escaped from the scene on a black motorcycle that did not bear a registration number.

Arrest and Seizure

Following the encounter, Budhia was taken into custody and shifted to hospital under police guard. Officials confirmed the seizure of a country-made firearm and live ammunition from his possession.

Criminal History Under Investigation

Police said Budhia is a resident of Tudigadia village in Balasore district and has nearly 15 criminal cases registered against him across police stations in Bhadrak and Balasore districts.

He is allegedly involved in multiple serious offences, including:

  • A ₹15 lakh robbery near Khaira, reportedly carried out after opening fire

  • A ₹5 lakh loot incident in Soro reported a few days ago

Investigators stated that in most cases, Budhia allegedly used firearms during the commission of crimes and is suspected to have looted several crores of rupees over time.

Further investigation is underway to trace his absconding associate and verify his involvement in other criminal activities.
