After days of scorching temperatures and humid weather, Odisha finally witnessed major relief as Nor’wester thunderstorms swept across several parts of the state, bringing rainfall, gusty winds and lightning activity.
The sudden weather change led to a noticeable drop in temperature in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and several adjoining districts on Thursday morning.
Nor’wester Thunderstorms Lash Bhubaneswar And Cuttack
On Wednesday evening, the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack experienced intense thunderstorm activity triggered by Nor’wester conditions.
Dark clouds covered the sky during the evening hours, followed by strong winds, heavy rainfall, thunder and lightning in multiple areas. The sudden storm disrupted normal movement in some localities and reportedly caused damage in several places.
Residents, however, welcomed the rainfall as it brought temporary relief from the severe heatwave and uncomfortable humidity that had gripped Odisha over the past few days.
Cloudy Weather Continues Across Odisha
Cloudy conditions continued in Bhubaneswar on Thursday morning, with cooler temperatures providing relief to people struggling with extreme summer heat.
According to the weather department, similar thunderstorm activity is likely to continue across many districts over the next few days.
IMD Issues Orange And Yellow Warnings
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued fresh warnings for several districts in Odisha due to the possibility of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds.
Orange Warning
An Orange Warning has been issued for eight districts where moderate to intense thunderstorm activity is expected.
Yellow Warning
At least 16 districts have been placed under Yellow Warning, indicating the likelihood of lightning, rainfall and gusty surface winds at isolated places.
The IMD has advised residents to remain alert during thunderstorm activity and avoid open areas, trees and water bodies during lightning strikes.
Heatwave Conditions Ease Temporarily
The rainfall has helped reduce daytime temperatures in many parts of Odisha, especially in coastal and central regions. However, weather experts say humidity levels may remain high despite the cooling effect of rain.
The state had been witnessing severe heatwave conditions over the past week, with several districts recording temperatures above normal.
Authorities Urge Public To Stay Cautious
Officials have advised people to:
- Avoid outdoor movement during thunderstorms
- Stay indoors during lightning activity
- Disconnect electrical appliances if lightning intensifies
- Follow official weather updates regularly
With Nor’wester activity expected to continue, authorities are closely monitoring the evolving weather situation across Odisha.
