Norway secured its place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a commanding 4-1 victory over Italy in Milan on Sunday.
The result marked Norway’s first qualification since 1998 and capped off a flawless campaign of eight wins, finishing six points clear of four-time champion Italy.
Italy entered the match needing a nine-goal win to surpass Norway’s superior goal difference. The hosts began aggressively and struck early when Francesco Pio Esposito converted a close-range finish in the 10th minute. Italy dominated the first half, creating several chances, while Norway managed only a half-chance through Antonio Nusa.
However, Norway shifted gears after the break. Nusa equalised in the 63rd minute with a precise left-foot strike from inside the box. From that moment, Norway controlled the game and punished Italy’s defensive lapses.
In the 78th minute, Erling Haaland capitalised on being left unmarked, volleying home with ease. Just a minute later, he added a second, taking his tally to 16 goals in the qualifying campaign. Jorgen Strand Larsen sealed the emphatic win with a stoppage-time strike, underlining Norway’s strength ahead of next year’s tournament.
Italy, missing out on direct qualification for the third consecutive time, now faces the playoffs. Meanwhile, Norway celebrated a historic achievement, proving they will be serious contenders in 2026.
