Odisha will not open any new liquor shops across the state, Excise Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan informed the Assembly on Saturday.
Responding to an unstarred question, the minister clarified that the government has taken a firm decision to halt the expansion of OFF and CL liquor outlets.
Harichandan stated that several liquor shops and bars have already shut down due to multiple reasons. These include public objections, ongoing court cases, illegal trade activities, and insolvency among license holders.
He emphasised that the government is committed to regulating the liquor trade and addressing concerns raised by communities. The closures reflect a broader effort to ensure accountability and transparency in excise operations.
The minister’s statement came in response to a query from MLA Sarada Prasad Nayak, who asked whether the government had reopened any previously closed liquor shops after June 2024 and if there was a roadmap toward a liquor-free Odisha.
While the minister did not outline a complete prohibition policy, his remarks indicated a cautious approach to liquor licensing. The decision not to open new shops aligns with growing public demand for stricter control over alcohol availability.
