The village of Singhpur in Odisha’s Jajpur district hosted a heartfelt programme titled “Nibida Ninada” on Thursday. The event honoured Ghanshyam Das and his wife Binapani Das for their life journey, contributions and the values they embody.
Organised to celebrate individuals whose lives offer meaningful lessons to society, the programme went beyond formal felicitation. It stressed the need to recognise personal contributions, preserve the experiences of the older generation and pass on their wisdom to the young.
The couple’s recognition highlighted that true contribution is not always measured by public fame or material success. The values practised throughout life, responsibilities fulfilled and experiences shared often leave the deepest impact. The event also underlined the importance of safeguarding the memories of senior citizens, whose stories offer insights into social change, cultural traditions, family bonds and the virtues of perseverance and mutual respect.
Odia comedian Pranja Ranjan Khatua and actor-artist Dr Chintamani Biswal attended as special guests. Khatua spoke on the richness of Odia culture and the invaluable knowledge held by elders, urging younger people to listen to their stories and keep traditions alive through meaningful engagement. Dr Biswal emphasised the moral responsibility of caring for parents with dignity, companionship and gratitude rather than viewing it as a mere obligation.
The Senior Citizens’ Forum of Singhpur also felicitated the couple, reinforcing community appreciation for ordinary lives of quiet contribution. Binapani Das expressed happiness and gratitude for the warm gesture. Subhrashree Das, the eldest daughter, conveyed thanks on behalf of Ghanshyam Das to the organisers, guests and well-wishers.
Convened by Ratnakar Das, the programme brought together family, literature enthusiasts and community members in an atmosphere of respect and affection. Nibida Ninada reminded everyone that respect for elders, gratitude towards parents and recognition of everyday values remain essential to a compassionate society.
