Amid ongoing unrest following the alleged suicide of a Nepali student at KIIT University, Odisha Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj has condemned the incident, terming it “barbaric.”
Addressing the Assembly on Friday, the minister announced the postponement of mid-semester exams and the provision of remedial classes for affected students.
A three-member high-level committee has been formed to probe the incident. The minister assured that both the Chief Minister and the Central Government are monitoring the situation closely and are in constant communication with state authorities.
The Odisha government has launched four 24-hour helpline numbers for student assistance and has urged Nepalese students to return to campus, promising a safe environment. The government will bear the travel expenses for students returning to the campus.
The high-level committee is scheduled to hear the matter at 3 PM today, with eight university officials expected to appear before the committee.
